Sunglasses which meet this requirement are frequently labeled as “UV400.” This is slightly more protection than the widely used standard of the European Union (see below), which calls for that 95 % of the radiation up to only 380 nm need to be reflected or filtered out.8 Sunglasses are not sufficient to defend the eyes against permanent harm from searching straight at the Sun, even for the duration of a solar eclipse. Whilst some blue blocking sunglasses (see above) are developed as regular sunglasses for exposure to vibrant sunlight, other individuals-particularly for macular degeneration individuals-do not block light or other colors in order to function effectively in regular daylight and even dim sunlight. The latter allow the passage of sufficient light so typical evening activities can continue, while blocking the light that prevents production of the hormone melatonin. Blue-blocking tinted glasses, i.e. amber or yellow, are sometimes recommended to treat insomnia they are worn in artificial lighting right after dark, to reestablish the circadian rhythm.
